What is a Dopp Kit?
A dopp kit is a compact bag designed to organize toiletries, grooming tools, and travel essentials while traveling. Today, the terms “dopp kit” and “toiletry bag” are often used interchangeably.
Traditionally, dopp kits were smaller zippered grooming bags carried inside luggage or duffels. Modern toiletry bags have evolved to include features like hanging systems, separated compartments, removable TSA liquids pouches, and easier organization for carry-on travel.
Where Did the Term “Dopp Kit” Come From?
The term comes from Charles Doppelt, a German leather craftsman whose company popularized leather toiletry cases in the early 1900s.
Before modern toiletry organizers became common, military-issued grooming kits were often made from canvas roll pouches with simple compartments for essentials like toothbrushes, shaving supplies, combs, and small personal items.
As travel evolved, structured zippered cases became more practical for organizing toiletries during transit. Over time, these cases became widely known as “dopp kits.”

The Evolution of the Modern Dopp Kit
The modern dopp kit took shape during World War II, when more service members moved away from canvas roll kits and toward structured zippered cases that were easier to pack and organize during travel.
Charles Doppelt invariably had a hand in this new development by designing the leather toilet case that "opens wide ... closes snug and flat, taking up little space in your luggage," to quote a vintage ad.
But calling it a toilet case was too crass for the masses, so many started calling it a Dopp kit, period.
Over time, it grew in popularity thanks to its lightweight and water-resistant construction, making it a go-to accessory for any traveler. By the '50s and '60s, Americans started using it to store cosmetics, shaving essentials, and other personal hygiene items.
Dopp Kit vs Toiletry Bag
There is no major functional difference between a dopp kit and a toiletry bag today.
“Dopp kit” is simply a more traditional term that remains popular in the United States, while “toiletry bag” is more commonly used internationally and across modern travel brands.
Most modern dopp kits now focus on:
- organization
- easier access
- leak containment
- compact packing
- carry-on compatibility
What Should You Pack in a Dopp Kit?
A typical dopp kit may include:
- toothbrush + toothpaste
- skincare products
- medications
- deodorant
- razors + grooming tools
- shampoo or body wash
- 3 oz travel bottles for carry-on travel
For shorter trips, compact setups often work best. Longer trips usually benefit from separated compartments and dedicated liquids storage that make toiletries easier to organize and access while traveling.
Hanging Toiletry Bags vs Traditional Dopp Kits
Traditional dopp kits were usually simple zippered pouches. Modern hanging toiletry bags are designed to improve visibility and organization by allowing the bag to hang from hooks, towel bars, or smaller spaces while traveling.
This is especially useful in:
- hotel bathrooms
- airports
- campsites
- vans
- smaller shared spaces
Modern Travel Organization
While the term “dopp kit” has been around for decades, modern travel setups have changed significantly.
Today’s travel toiletry systems are designed around:
- separated organization
- removable TSA liquids storage
- easier access during transit
- compact packing inside carry-ons and backpacks
For lighter packing, compact setups like the SLIM work well for shorter trips. Longer travel days and fuller routines often benefit from additional organization and liquids separation like the PLUS.

I still have a “Dopp kit” that was a high school graduation present in 1967.
I still have it and use it whenever I travel. A great product!
