Important Documents + Vehicle Items

Before leaving, make sure important travel documents and vehicle information are easy to access.

  • Driver’s license
  • Vehicle registration
  • Car insurance information
  • Roadside assistance contact
  • Spare key
  • Cash
  • Toll pass or transponder
  • Vehicle manual

A quick vehicle check before leaving can also help avoid unnecessary problems during longer drives. Check tire pressure, fluid levels, battery condition, brakes, and windshield wipers before heading out.

Emergency + Safety Gear

Emergency supplies help prepare for unexpected weather, breakdowns, or longer stretches between stops.

  • First aid kit
  • Spare tire
  • Car jack
  • Jumper cables
  • Flashlight
  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Basic tool kit
  • Duct tape
  • Mechanics gloves
  • Ice scraper
  • Extra water

Keeping emergency items separated from everyday travel gear makes them easier to access when needed.

Clothing + Personal Items

Road trip clothing works best when it’s comfortable, easy to layer, and simple to access throughout the drive.

  • Comfortable layers
  • Hoodie or jacket
  • Extra socks
  • Sunglasses
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Lip balm
  • Earplugs
  • Toothbrush + toiletries
  • Laundry bag

Packing cubes or smaller organizers can help separate clean clothes, worn layers, and smaller personal items during multi-day travel.

Toiletries for Road Trips

Road trip toiletries work best when they stay separated and easy to access while moving between hotels, campsites, Airbnbs, and rest stops.

A typical road trip toiletry setup may include:

  • Skincare
  • Deodorant
  • Medications
  • Shaving supplies
  • Shampoo + body wash
  • Travel bottles
  • Wipes
  • Hand sanitizer

Compact toiletry systems help reduce clutter and keep frequently used items easier to find during longer drives, especially during multi-stop trips or shared spaces like hotels and campsites.

Road trip toiletries work best when they stay separated, organized, and easy to access between stops. Compact setups like the SLIM toiletry bag work well for lighter packing and shorter trips, while the PLUS toiletry bag offers additional organization and removable liquids storage for longer drives and fuller routines.

Food + Hydration

Keeping snacks and drinks within reach helps reduce unnecessary stops and makes long stretches in the car more manageable.

Smaller snack organizers or pouches can also help reduce clutter around seats and center consoles during longer drives.

Blankets + Comfort Items

Packable travel blankets are one of the most useful road trip essentials, especially during:

  • overnight drives
  • colder weather
  • camping stops
  • passengers sleeping in the car
  • long stretches in transit

Packable blankets help add warmth without taking up unnecessary space inside the vehicle.

Other comfort-focused road trip items may include:

  • neck pillows
  • microfiber towels
  • hoodies or extra layers
  • seat cushions
  • travel notebooks

Keeping comfort items packed within reach makes long travel days easier to manage.

Reusable Tote Bag

A reusable tote bag is useful for grocery stops, snacks, extra layers, quick errands, and carrying loose items between the car, hotel, campsite, or Airbnb during road trips.

Tip: A day pack is essential for carrying your valuables while you explore new areas. A small day pack helps keep chargers, valuables, layers, and frequently used items easy to access during stops along the route. Try complementing it with a carabiner or some other locking mechanism.

Road Trip Tech Essentials

A few small tech items can make navigation, charging, and long drives significantly easier.

  • Phone charger
  • USB cables
  • Power bank
  • Car charger
  • Phone mount
  • Headphones
  • Camera or GoPro
  • Downloaded maps
  • Podcasts or playlists

Offline maps and downloaded entertainment are especially helpful when driving through rural areas with limited service.

Car Organization Items

Keeping smaller items contained helps reduce clutter and makes frequently used gear easier to reach while traveling.

  • Trunk organizer
  • Packing cubes
  • Duffel bag
  • Day pack
  • Reusable shopping bags
  • Car trash can
  • Coin pouch
  • AirTags

Separating toiletries, tech accessories, snacks, and clothing into smaller systems can make packing and unpacking significantly easier during multi-stop trips.

Extra Road Trip Essentials

Depending on the route, weather, and length of travel, a few additional items may help make the trip more comfortable.

  • Bug spray
  • Umbrella
  • Swiss Army knife or multi-tool
  • Extra batteries
  • Window shades
  • Laundry detergent packets
  • Tide-To-Go pen
  • Car vacuum
  • Travel mug
  • Notebook + pens

Longer trips, camping routes, and family travel often benefit from additional organization and backup supplies.

How to Pack Smarter for a Road Trip

The best road trip setups prioritize organization and accessibility over overpacking.

Keeping toiletries separated, chargers contained, snacks easy to reach, and blankets packed close makes long travel days feel significantly easier — especially during multi-stop trips or extended time on the road.

Smaller organizers, toiletry systems, packing cubes, and seat-accessible essentials help reduce clutter and make the car easier to manage throughout the trip.

Very good complete list. Oprah had a list but it’s all commercial junk.

I would add:
1. Take car to garage for checkup and oil change. Check your spare tire!!! Bring oil and radiator fluid if it’s hot where you are going.
2. Clean car interior
3. Download music and podcasts – we drove through Utah with no cell coverage
4. Print all important info and maps on paper – no cell or Wi-Fi coverage, or the computer is down at your hotel.
5. Jackery or device charging pack. Ours has a solar panel.
